Clinpro prophy paste is a cleaning and polishing paste containing an abrasive particle. The abrasive (perlite) converts its coarse grains to fine grains when applied to a tooth surface during a prophylaxis. The paste has self-adjusting abrasive properties that allow it to be used in both the cleaning and polishing of tooth surfaces. During clinical use, the fragile crystal platelets are crushed and rounded in the rubber cup (or brush) by pressure. The cleaning ability of the paste declines soon after the onset of the treatment. The "cleaning" paste is then converted to "polishing" paste, which provides a glossy effect on the teeth.
