Forsyth Scientist Dr. Sigmund Socransky Receives 'Distinguished Scientist' Award From AADR

Boston - Forsyth scientist, Dr. Sigmund S. Socransky, is the recipient of the American Association for Dental Research's (AADR) highest honor, the "Distinguished Scientist Award." Dr. Socransky, recognized for his outstanding contributions to dental research, has dedicated his 49-year career at The Forsyth Institute to the study of the microbiology of periodontal (gum) diseases.

Dr. Socransky, a Senior Member of the Staff at The Forsyth Institute, and his colleagues are responsible for identifying many of the species responsible for oral diseases. His research encompasses a wide range of oral microbiology including examining not only pathogens that cause disease but also how these organisms relate to each other and their habitats.

When describing his work on the ecology of oral disease, Dr. Socransky displays a spirit that differentiates him as a 'Distinguished Scientist,' "We went further because there is such a long way to go," said Dr. Socransky. In addition to looking at local factors that affect the microbial environment, Dr. Socransky is also looking at systemic factors. He foresees a future when therapy can be matched to a person's specific disease causing organisms and their response to those organisms.

"Dr. Socranksy is truly a legend in the field of oral health research," said Dr. Dominick P. DePaola, President and CEO of The Forsyth Institute. "It is no surprise that he is being honored with this award. His work has inspired generations of scientists and made a major impact on our understanding of periodontal disease."

This award, supported by GlaxoSmithKline, is the highest accolade the AADR can bestow and is given in years when the AADR meets separately from its parent organization, the International Association for Dental Research.
