In addition to the full range of dental practice management features such as recall, cash-flow, scheduling, laboratory tracking, medical prescription tracking, case and progress notes, and extensive management reporting, Version 2 of Direct Vision98 allows the free exchange of data between themselves and word processors, spreadsheets, and clinical applications. Some of these applications include Schick CDR, Chart-It, Vipersoft, Televox's House Calls, Capture-It, Imagine-It, NI-DX, Orthovision, TigerView, DentX, CAESY, Americas Dental Health, Communident, and numerous other multimedia and other popular clinical products.

The software is a true 32-bit, client/server, Windows 98/NT network application that is written in Powerbuilder and uses Sybase SQL as a back end database. New to this version are "no-click" features such as automatically written and locked progress and clinical notes, automatically generated post operative instruction sheets, and automatic post-operative call tracking by provider.

Also new is the In-Office Status Screen. This window is visible from all workstations and tracks the flow of patients through the office with easy to follow, colorful displays. It refreshes itself every 30 seconds, keeping the user continually informed of the movements of patients through the office; how long patients are waiting in the reception area; which patients are in treatment; where they are in treatment; how long they spend in treatment; and which patients have been completed and posted.

The program's scheduling system allows users to drag and drop appointments into a special emergency/overflow column, preview open time search results prior to committing to them, register patients and post treatment from the scheduler, and link the schedule and treatment plan to automatically post treatment from the schedule.
